PARENTING IS FOREVER
One of the benefits of joint parenting and sharing responsibility of children post separation is that it upholds and confirms that parenting is forever and that just because a marriage or parents relationship ends, it allows the children access to both parents during their childhood and adolescence.
Family arrangements should be rearranged to compensate to the parenting relationship ending. Joint responsibility also prevents a power imbalance between the parents and prevents the perception there is a ‘winner and loser’.
It is important that professionals working with parents post separation promote healthy communication for the sake of healthy relationships being maintained for the children. Children will feel more secure and less conflicted if the parents can role model this positive communication and consider their children’s needs above their own.
